CHEERLEADER OF THE GAME
SARAH GRAHAM/ Kudos' to
Sarah for always having great facials during the entire game.
WF-R
Ladies Golf Team wins at
Hedingham
After
finishing
second
overall
in its
first
Cap-7
conference
match
Sept. 5,
WF-R
golf
coach
Sharon
Barham
sat down
with her
team and
weighed
its
options.
The
match at
Wake
Forest
Golf
Club was
the
first
after
the
conference
voted to
continue
to use
the
two-score
format
rather
than
changing
to the
three-score
style
used by
the rest
of the
state.
As a
result,
many
team
members
were
frustrated.
The
three-score
format
would
have
helped
the
Cougars’
chances
to win
the
conference,
and the
team
members
knew it
would be
a lot
harder
to win
under
the old
rules.
“I said
to them
‘We
could
sit here
and
whine
and moan
about it
or we
can step
up to
the
plate,’”
Barham
said.
“Every
single
one of
them can
stay
below
40, and
a couple
of you
can stay
close to
par.
“So we
can
either
do that
or we
can sit
here and
whine
and moan
about
it.”
Barham’s
words
apparently
had an
impact
on the
Cougars
as WF-R
has made
a push
for the
conference
title in
recent
weeks.
The
Cougars
finished
second
in the
two
matches
following
their
opener,
tied for
first
with
Broughton
Sept. 25
and
finished
first
Tuesday
at Wake
Forest
G.C.
WF-R
currently
stands a
half-point
behind
Wakefield
for
first
place in
the
Cap-7,
with two
matches
remaining.
“That
was
definitely
a boost
for the
girls,”
Barham
said of
the
first-
place
finish
on Sept.
25.
“I’ve
tried to
tell
them
they can
achieve
it.”
The
Cougars
got
strong
performances
from
Shauna
Walor
and
freshman
Megan
Whisnant
Tuesday.
Walor
shot a
one over
38 and
Whisnant
shot her
Cap-7
best six
over 43.
Walor
has come
on
strong
lately,
according
to her
coach.
With
just two
scores
qualifying,
Walor
needs to
play
strong
in order
to
offset
Wakefield’s
Courtney
McKim’s
consistently
stellar
play.
“Shauna
Walor
has
definitely
stepped
up to
the
plate,
and
she’s
pretty
close to
par
every
time,”
Barham
said. “I
look at
Shauna
now, and
she can
go below
par if
she lets
herself.”
WF-R’s
third
and
fourth
scorers
— Megan
Levy and
Anna
Padgett
— have
also
seen
jumps in
their
play as
the
season
has
progressed.
Levy
shot a
37 in
the
Cougars’
second
conference
match,
and
Padgett’s
handicap
shrank
from 24
to 12.
“That’s
a huge
drop,”
Barham
said of
Padgett’s
handicap.
“Her
short
game has
gotten a
lot
better.
She was
struggling
horribly
with
putting
and
chipping,
but she
got a
new
wedge
she
absolutely
loves
and has
a lot of
confidence
in.
“So if
she
misses
the
green,
she
knows
she can
chip it
on. It
used to
be a
rarity
for her
to have
a one or
two
putt,
and now
it’s a
rarity
for her
to have
a three
putt.
That has
made a
huge
improvement
for
her,”
Barham
said.
Levy and
Padgett’s
scores
will
help the
Cougars
come
playoff
time,
when
teams
will use
three
scores
rather
than
two.
But
until
the
state
playoffs
occurs,
WF-R is
still
focused
on
winning
the
Cap-7.
“We’ve
kind of
been in
an
uphill
battle,”
Barham
said.
“They
know
what
they’re
up
against.
We’re
just
trying
to keep
them
positive
and
understanding
that
they’ve
got it
in
them.”
Cougars CrossCountry Team sets the pace
Despite Lady Wolverine Devon Enderle’s personal best — and first-place finish — Wake Forest -Rolesville’s girls cross county team defeated Wakefield 26-32 Monday at Flaherty Park.
Enderle, a freshman, finished in 21:34, but the Lady Cougars captured seven of the top nine places to capture the dual-meet victory.
The win was a team effort as Cougars’ Blair Bridges took second (21:43), Emily Tucker third (22:04), Mandy Fichera sixth (23:30), Megan Stevenson seventh (23:42), Rachel Cash eighth(23:47) and Emily Fichera ninth (24:48).
“It was a nice team win for us,” said WF-R coach Patrick Marshall. “We have continued
to show improvement throughout the year, and I think are times will continue to get better.”
Although the Lady Wolverines came up short, coach Wayne Dubnansky was pleasantly surprised by the strong finish, as the Lady Wolverines were without several runners.
“We had a good day today,” the coach said. “That’s what’s nice about cross country — you don’t have to win to feel good about the day.”
As for his top finisher, Dubnansky said Enderle is just beginning to scratch her potential as a runner.
“She still doesn’t know how good she can be yet,” he said. “But she ran with confidence the whole race and she finished well.
“She was so strong coming to the end; it was incredible.”
Enderle and Wakefield assistant coach Kazem Yahyapour have a friendly challenge to see if the freshman can best the coach’s time of 21:07 this fall.
Dubnansky believes it’s just a matter of time before Enderle breaks the mark.
As for the rest of the Lady Wolverines, Tracy Morris finished fourth (22:36), Erica Andrews fifth (23:00) and Maggie Holmes 10th (24:48).
It was the second time the Wolverines and Cougars have squared off this fall, competing just 12 days beforehand.
Wakefield’s girls won the first meeting 26-30.
Hardy leads Cougars
For the second time in two weeks, Wakefield’s Andy Mikus set the pace (17:36) against WF-R, only to have the Cougars pull out the victory 22-33.
Led by Zack Hardy’s time of 18:07, the Cougars captured five of the top seven positions Monday.
WF-R’s Austin Shaw captured third (18:25), Ernest Hawkins fourth (18:44), Will Osborne sixth (19:08) and CJ Osman seventh (19:13).
Spencer Warren finished fifth (18:48) and Jonathan Horton placed eighth (19:20) for the Wolverines.
“Zack Hardy’s running better than he did at the beginning of the year,” Marshall said. “He was nowhere near these times he’s putting in right now.”
During the last three races, Hardy has emerged the Cougars’ No. 1 runner, the coach added.
Marshall added he felt his runners’ ability to run together — especially his top five runners — has improved their times.
“Our top runners are really starting to push their times, and running together has made them more consistent,” he said. “They’re not competing with Andy Mikus and runners of his caliber yet, but they’re getting there.”
Marshall added Osman’s performance was especially solid, considering he’s been fighting a stomach bug.
The Cougars defeated Wakefield in the team’s first meeting two weeks ago 22-37.
In other competition
While competing at last week’s Greensboro Invitational, Mikus ran the 5K event in 16:54 — to coach Dubnansky’s knowledge, the best time ever by a Wakefield runner.
The coach added the boys team collectively ran well as Mikus, Warren, Mitch Bergeson, Rob Snyder and Ryan Kirk all finished under 20 minutes.
“It’s kind of a milestone for us,” Dubnansky said. “We don’t have Broughton or Enloe milestones; we have Wakefield milestones.”
Also last week, the Cougars boys team defeated Sanderson 24-31, and the girls lost 26-33.
Hardy, Shaw and Hawkins finished second, third and fifth, respectively.
Despite Bridges’ first-place finish (21:52) and Tucker’s second (22:05), the Lady Spartans bested the Lady Cougars.
On Wednesday, Oct. 10, Wakefield competes against Sanderson and Broughton at Sanderson.
The Cougars host Leesville Road the same day at 5 p.m.
